If I had a pound for every time I moved a plant to a “better spot” only to realise I’d just sentenced it to a slow decline, I’d be able to buy an actual greenhouse by now. Light, my friends, is one of the most misunderstood aspects of houseplant care — and I’m speaking from a history of trial, error, and several crispy-leafed casualties.
Let’s break it down, shall we?

🌿 Why Light Matters (More Than You Think)
Light is basically your plant’s food. While we’re out here snacking on crisps and tea biscuits, our leafy friends are quietly converting sunlight into energy like it’s no big deal. Without it, they can’t photosynthesise properly — and then, well, things get a bit sad.
But here’s the kicker: not all light is created equal. Some plants want blazing sun. Some want filtered shade. Some just want to vibe in a north-facing bathroom and be left alone.

🕵️♀️ Signs Your Plant Is Desperate for More Light
Not sure if your plant’s feeling the sunshine? Here are the classic red flags:
Leaves leaning dramatically toward light sources – That’s your plant’s version of a desperate “helloooo?!”
Leggy growth – If your plant’s stretching like it’s doing yoga toward the window, it’s begging for more light.
Smaller, paler leaves – New growth should be bold and proud, not tiny and apologetic.
Slow (or no) growth – During spring and summer, your plant should be popping off. If not, check the light.

🧭 Finding the Right Spot
Generally speaking:
- South-facing windows = brightest light (but watch out for scorch!)
- East and west-facing = bright but softer
- North-facing = low light, good for shade lovers

Still unsure? Here’s a simple hack: stand in your plant’s spot around midday. If you can read a book without switching on a light, it’s probably decent. If not, consider moving your plant or giving it a little boost…

🌤️ Don’t Panic, Just Tweak
If your plant’s not thriving, don’t give up — just make small changes. Try moving it closer to a window, switching rooms, or adding a grow light for a few hours a day. Most plants are surprisingly forgiving… unless they’re calatheas, in which case: may the odds be ever in your favour.
