The Only 5 Things You Actually Need to Keep Houseplants Alive

(You don’t need a cupboard full of plant products — just this)

🌱 Before we get into it…

When I first got into houseplants, I thought I needed everything.

Special feeds. Fancy tools. Different products for every plant.

And honestly? It just made everything more complicated.

Over time, I’ve realised something much simpler:

👉 Most houseplants thrive on a few basics done well.

If you get these right, everything else becomes easier.

🪴 1. Good soil (this matters more than anything else)

If your plant is struggling, there’s a good chance it’s not the watering…

👉 it’s the soil.

Dense, compacted soil:

  • holds too much water
  • suffocates roots
  • causes slow decline

Switching to a lighter mix (compost + perlite) makes an immediate difference.

👉 If you haven’t already, start here:

A combination of these two products is an absolute winner for success:

🪴 2. Pots with proper drainage

This is one of the simplest upgrades — and one of the most important.

A pot without drainage:

👉 traps water at the bottom

👉 leads to root rot (eventually)

Even if you’re careful.

Look for:

☀️ 3. Enough light (even if it’s not perfect)

Most plants don’t need perfect light.

But they do need:

👉 enough to stay healthy

If your plant:

  • isn’t growing
  • looks pale
  • keeps dropping leaves

👉 light is often the missing piece.

💧 4. A way to water without guessing

This is where most people struggle.

Because the advice is always:

👉 “don’t overwater”

…but no one tells you how to actually know.

Instead of guessing, you can:

  • check soil with your finger
  • lift the pot (you’ll get used to the weight)

Or…

👉 use a simple moisture meter

It’s one of those things that:

  • feels unnecessary at first
  • then becomes something you rely on

🔄 5. A simple routine (not perfection)

You don’t need a strict schedule.

You don’t need to check your plants every day.

What works better is:

👉 a simple, repeatable rhythm

Something like:

  • quick check every few days
  • water when needed
  • adjust as you go

Plants are much more forgiving than they seem.

🌿 What you

don’t

 need (most of the time)

This is just as important.

You don’t need:

  • lots of different feeds
  • complicated routines
  • a product for every problem

In fact, adding too much often makes things worse.

🧠 If you’re feeling overwhelmed…

Start here:

  1. Check your soil
  2. Check your light
  3. Stop guessing watering

That alone solves most plant problems.

🌱 A quiet shift

Once you simplify things like this…

Plant care stops feeling stressful.

And starts feeling:

  • intuitive
  • slower
  • much more enjoyable

🌿 Final thought

You don’t need to be perfect to keep plants alive.

You just need a few things that work.

Get those right…

and everything else tends to fall into place.
