(No schedules. No guessing. Just what actually works.)
🌿 Let’s be honest…
If you’ve ever Googled this, you’ve probably seen:
👉 “Water once a week”
👉 “Water every 10 days”

And thought…
…but my plant doesn’t seem to care about schedules.
That’s because:
👉 there is no perfect schedule.
And trying to follow one is often what causes problems.
🧠 The simple truth
Houseplants don’t need watering on a timetable.
They need watering:
👉 when the soil is ready
That’s it.
💧 So… how often should you water?
Instead of thinking in days…
Think in conditions.
Most houseplants need watering when:
- the top 2–5cm of soil feels dry
- the pot feels lighter
- the plant starts to look slightly less “perky”
👉 For some plants, that might be:
- every 5 days
- every 10 days
- even longer in winter
🚫 Why watering schedules don’t work
Because your home isn’t a fixed environment.
Watering depends on:
- ☀️ light levels
- 🌡️ temperature
- 🪴 pot size
- 🌱 soil type
👉 Change any one of these…
and the schedule stops working.
🔍 The easiest way to get it right
👉 Method 1: The finger test
- Stick your finger into the soil
- If it feels dry → water
- If it feels damp → wait
👉 Method 2: Lift the pot
- Dry soil = light
- Wet soil = heavy
This becomes second nature surprisingly quickly.
👉 Method 3: Use a moisture meter
👉 This one is simple and easy to use
This removes the guesswork completely — especially if you’re new.
🌊 How to water properly (this matters more than frequency)
When you do water:
👉 water thoroughly
- soak the soil fully
- let excess water drain out
- don’t leave the plant sitting in water
👉 This is much better than small, frequent watering.
🪴 Your soil changes everything
If your soil holds too much water…
👉 even “correct” watering can cause problems
If it drains well…
👉 your plant becomes much more forgiving
👉 Start here:
🍂 Signs you’re watering too much
- yellow leaves
- soft stems
- soil always feels wet
🌿 Signs you’re not watering enough
- dry, crispy leaves
- soil pulling away from pot
- drooping that improves after watering
🌡️ Seasonal changes (very important in the UK)
In winter:
- plants need less water
- soil dries more slowly
In spring/summer:
- growth increases
- watering becomes more frequent
👉 Adjusting with the seasons makes a huge difference.
🧠 A better way to think about watering
Instead of asking:
👉 “How often should I water?”
Ask:
👉 “Does this plant need water right now?”
That one shift changes everything.
🌿 A simple routine that actually works
- Check soil every few days
- Water when dry
- Adjust based on season
That’s it.
No strict rules. No stress.
🌱 Final thought
Most watering problems don’t come from doing too little…
👉 they come from trying to follow rules that don’t fit your home
Once you learn to read your plant instead…
Everything gets easier.
